Former president Nelson Mandela arrived at his rural home at Qunu yesterday in the Eastern Cape to celebrate his 93rd birthday at his home in the presence of family.
Madiba arrived onboard a military flight at uMthatha Airport late yesterday afternoon and was taken to his home where strict security measures are in place.

Mandela turns 93 on Monday July 18 and many activities have been planned around the world to celebrate this special day.

93 houses for Madiba's 93rd

MEC for Local Government and Housing in Limpopo, Soviet Lekganyane, handed over 93 RDP houses to destitute families at Shongoane outside Lephalale to celebrate Madiba's 93rd birthday. The function is a run-up to the Nelson Mandela Day Celebrations to be held in Giyani on Monday.

Lekganyane told hundreds of villagers gathered at Shongoane sports ground that giving people decent accommodation was something very special to Nelson Mandela. "Our intention was to hand over 93 houses today to coincide with 93 years of his existence on earth. Today our constructor surprised us she has completed 160 houses out of 175 which are already completed."

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro has added a bit of an African renaissance in its long list of activities to celebrate Mandela Day. The Metro will support a match between Motherwell Township residents and the foreign nationals who have made the township their home.

Metro Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile says the match is the initiative of the community itself aimed at promoting social cohesion between the locals and the foreigners in the township.
